What we collect

LingoGist collects only the data needed to deliver your language learning experience:

  • Account information — your email and name from Google or Apple sign-in
  • Learning preferences — your selected languages, topics, and birthday (optional)
  • Learning data — word familiarity, reading history, comprehension probe responses, and assessment results
  • Session data — when you use the app and for how long

What we do NOT collect

  • Location data
  • Contact lists
  • Browsing history outside LingoGist
  • Financial information
  • Biometric data

How we use your data

Your data is used exclusively to personalize your learning experience — calibrating difficulty, selecting vocabulary, and tracking your progress. We do not sell or share your data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

Third-party services

We use the following services to operate LingoGist:

  • Firebase Authentication (Google) — for sign-in. Receives your email.
  • Claude API (Anthropic) — for generating learning content. No personal data is sent — only language learning vocabulary and passages.
  • Google Cloud Text-to-Speech — for audio playback. Receives passage and word text only, no personal data.
  • Google Cloud SQL & Cloud Run — for hosting and data storage.

Cookies

LingoGist uses only functional cookies required for the service to work:

  • Session tokens — to keep you signed in (httpOnly, secure)
  • CSRF protection — to prevent cross-site request forgery

We do not use analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies.

Your rights

You have the right to:

  • Export your data — download all your data as a JSON file from Settings
  • Delete your account — permanently remove all your data from Settings
  • Update your information — change your preferences anytime in Settings

Data retention

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. If you don't sign in for 2 years, we'll send a reminder email and delete your account after 30 days if there's no response.
